Forsmark International Forum

Forsmark is entering a transformative phase in nuclear waste management. With regulatory approvals secured and long‑term site readiness established, SKB’s largest and most ambitious construction project to date—the Spent Fuel Repository—has commenced. In parallel, expansion of the Final Repository for Short‑Lived Radioactive Waste (SFR) has been underway since December 2024. Together, these initiatives place SKB at the global forefront of geological repository deployment, integrating decades of subsurface science and engineering research into operational reality.

These projects can now be tracked and analysed through the Forsmark International Forum (FIF). Developed by SKB International, FIF is a knowledge platform for radioactive waste management organizations worldwide, enabling their participants to follow the industrialisation of SKB’s KBS‑3 concept and engage with SKB experts as the projects progress from planning and licensing through construction and into operation.

The Forsmark International Forum (FIF) is designed to facilitate:

  • Regular updates on SKB’s plans, progress, and experience from repository construction at Forsmark
  • Insight into SKB’s ongoing research, technical development and innovation activities
  • A structured dialogue between SKB experts and international peers
  • Planning, development and decision‑making within the participants’ own organizations through tailored support

Information on activities at Forsmark is published on a monthly basis.
